Should I give creators creative freedom or give them a script?

Our agency wants to give creators a full script for authenticity. Our MD wants full creative control for brand safety. Who is right?

Both extremes are wrong. The right answer: structured freedom. Give creators: the key message (non-negotiable), the mandatory elements (disclosure, CTA, specific claim limits), the tone/mood (aspirational, funny, educational). Let creators decide: how to open the video (their hook, their style), the narrative arc and story, their language and dialect, how to weave the product in naturally. Why full scripts fail: audiences can tell within 3 seconds when a creator is reading someone else's words. Authenticity collapse destroys the reason you're using a creator in the first place. Why zero direction fails: you risk off-brand content that needs reshoots or public corrections. The sweet spot is a one-page brief, not a script.

The best brand I work with sends me a one-paragraph brief and 3 reference posts they loved. Then they say "make your version of this." That's it. Their content performs 3x better than brands who send 12-page scripts because I create for my audience, not for their legal team.
