My first creator post flopped — 3,200 views and zero orders. What went wrong?

Paid ₹7,000 for a Reel from a 95k follower creator. Got 3,200 views, 0 trackable orders. Bio link was not set up. Creator used a generic mention. Feeling like influencer marketing does not work. What did I miss?

Three things happened here simultaneously: (1) 3,200 views from a 95k creator is an unusually low reach — normal would be 20,000–40,000. This is either a poorly optimised Reel or the creator has real engagement issues worth investigating. (2) No bio link = no conversion path. Even if 200 people wanted to buy, there was nowhere to go. (3) "Generic mention" means no CTA. Influencer content without a clear next step (link in bio, use code X, DM for discount) converts at near-zero regardless of quality. The campaign likely did not fail — the infrastructure around it did. Fix these three, run again.

The bio link thing kills more campaigns than anything else. I always tell brands: update your Instagram bio before I post. Not during, not after — before. Story swipe-up and bio link together is the conversion path. If only one exists, you lose half the traffic.

We had a similar result. Then we realised the creator had 95k followers but majority were from a viral meme that had nothing to do with our niche. On CreloAI now I always check the match score and niche tags before approving — saved us from two more bad picks.

Low views from a large account is almost always an algorithm flag — the content did not hook viewers in the first 2-3 seconds and Instagram stopped distributing it. Ask your creator for the video retention graph. If it drops below 20% at the 3-second mark, the hook failed. Next time, brief the creator specifically on the hook.

I stopped thinking of influencer marketing as individual posts and started thinking of it as a 30-day experiment. One post is not a data point. Run the same product with 3 different creators, 3 different hooks. You will learn what works. Then scale that.

Something nobody says: ask the creator to pin your collaboration to their profile for 2 weeks. Most creators do not do this unless asked. It gives your content a second and third life as people discover the creator's page organically.
