How do I write a brief that creators actually read?

We sent a 4-page brief to 6 creators. 3 of them completely ignored half the requirements in their content. Is there a better way to structure briefs so creators actually follow them?

The 4-page brief is the problem, not the creators. Our data shows creators open briefs for under 90 seconds on average. What works: (1) One-page max with bullet points. (2) Lead with the one thing you MUST see in the content — put it in bold at the top. (3) Separate "must have" from "nice to have." (4) Include 2 example videos of the tone you want, not text descriptions. Briefs with video references get 2.3x better content quality scores in our platform data.

Creator here — I ignore long briefs too, honestly. Not because I am lazy but because I cannot remember 20 requirements while filming. My favorite briefs have 3 sections: (1) What to say (key message in one sentence), (2) What NOT to say (common mistakes brands want avoided), (3) One example video. That is it. If there are more than 5 bullet points I start to feel like a copywriter, not a creator.

We shortened our brief to a single Google Doc page and our content quality went up immediately. One trick: send the brief as a Loom video walkthrough (5 mins max). Creators watch it because it feels personal, not corporate. We saw 90% brief compliance vs about 60% with text-only briefs.

The best briefs I have seen include a "creator freedom zone" section explicitly — listing things the creator can change or improvise. When creators know what is flexible, they do not overthink the whole thing. Rigid briefs produce robotic content. Give 3 hard requirements and freedom on everything else.

One more thing: WhatsApp the brief, do not only email it. I almost never check my email for brand communication. A voice note summary of the brief sent on WhatsApp gets acknowledged within hours. Email sits for days.
