Should I do barter first or pay cash for my first campaign?

Budget is tight — around ₹20k liquid. Product is a D2C protein snack at ₹349/pack. Should I offer barter (free product) to 10–15 creators, or pay 3–4 creators with the full ₹20k? What actually works better at this stage?

At ₹349 AOV with a ₹20k budget — barter is the stronger first move for a food/snack brand specifically. Here is why: (1) Product experience is the core of the pitch, creators need to genuinely taste it. (2) Barter creators who choose to promote your product have real intent, not just a paycheque. (3) At ₹349, you can send 10–15 packs at essentially zero cash outlay and cast a much wider net. Our data shows barter campaigns for consumable products (food, supplements, skincare) outperform cash campaigns by 28% on engagement because the content looks more authentic. Save the ₹20k to boost the best-performing creator posts.

As a food creator I will say: I get way more excited about a product I genuinely try vs something I am just paid to talk about. For snacks especially, my audience watches to see my real reaction. Barter works amazingly for food. Send me your snack and if I love it you will get a genuine, enthusiastic video that your cash cannot buy.

We did exactly this for our millet snack brand. Sent product to 12 creators, 8 posted, 4 of those had really solid performance. Used ₹15k to boost the top 2 videos. Got 900+ website visits and 47 orders in 2 weeks. Total cash spent: ₹15k + product cost (~₹3k). Would not have got that from 3 paid creators.

One critical thing for barter: be selective about who you send product to. Do not spray and pray. Look at their recent content quality, engagement authenticity, and whether they post in your category. 8 targeted barter creators will massively outperform 20 random ones.

Flip side: for premium products (high AOV, aspirational brand positioning) cash-paid collaborations sometimes signal more seriousness. A creator who is paid takes it more seriously as a deliverable. For snacks at ₹349 though — barter all the way.
